The Pink Lady - The perfect apple

There are some things you just can’t rush. Pink Lady apples are left on the tree longer than any other apple. This allows them to develop their characteristic pink blush and pack a sweet, crisp, champagne-like burst.

Simply stated they are one of the best apples out there. We love them! And our customers sure do. As far as we know we are the ONLY office fruit supplier in the UK that regularly includes Pink Lady apples in our fruit boxes.

Pink Lady Background
Pink Lady was developed in the 1970s by John Cripps in Western Australia, and is a cross between Golden Delicious and Lady Williams. Lady Williams is not a particularly well known apple variety in Europe, but has been quite widely grown in Australia, having been discovered as a chance seedling in the 1930s. It is probably from Lady Williams that Pink Lady gets its distinct colouring.

Pink Lady requires a very long growing period and a hot climate, and hence is only grown in the warmer apple-growing regions of South Africa, USA, southern Europe - and of course Australia. Strong sunlight in autumn is vital for the pink coloration to develop and growers may remove the top-most leaves of the trees to allow light to penetrate. Pink Lady is a vigorous tree and hangs on to its leaves well into winter. It also shares a characteristic found in some other apple varieties in that the quality of fruit in the early years of the tree is not good.

The Pink Lady is a true premium apple. You will find them in your local supermarkets, but they are often very expensive and more likely to be closer to the Cripps Pink weaker variety. We only include the best Pink Lady apples in our fruit boxes. Like every other fruit we provide in our boxes it is handpicked to ensure you only receive your fruit in perfect condition.

Snack attack!

You’re sat at your desk, it’s been a long and stressful day and your stomach is rumbling. You could indulge yourself with a snack but you think it’s best to wait. However, although you may feel guilty about a mid morning or afternoon treat, snacking doesn’t necessarily have to be a bad thing. In fact a healthy snack, such as fruit, can provide you with that little boost of energy you need to get you through the day!

Fruit contains different types of natural sugars, some giving you a burst of energy while others offer a more slow and sustained release. For example, grapes release sugar much faster than cherries even though they contain about the same amount of sugar and energy overall. Eating a banana is also quick and effective way of lifting your energy levels. Bananas can give you the kind of immediate energy rush or sugar hit that you might get from chocolate but in this case it’s a healthy one, which is why this fruit is often the snack of choice for people participating in sports or training.

If you find tempted to snack because you’re bored (at work surely not!) or are effected the “3pm slump” resulting in feelings of tiredness and de-motivation, it may be because you are dehydrated. Fruits like watermelons and oranges are great at providing much needed fluids for your body.

So the next time you find yourself slaving away at work and hunger strikes, a fruit box will provide you with a healthful choice of snacks just a few steps away!
